Is Strauss’s view of Enlightenment rationalism at the same time an open polemic against it and a tacit approval of its critical presuppositions? Is the reason he believes one should return to the medieval philosophy of Maimonides and his predecessors the political necessity to hide the inherently atheistic presuppositions of science or did Maimonides provide access to an actual synthesis of revealed and rational truth? Taken such ambiguities as intentional, Verskin suggests that, beginning with Philosophy and Law and culminating in the introductory essay to the Guide, “How to Begin to Study The Guide of the Perplexed”, Strauss uses a method of addressing multiple audiences at once. This method, Verskin believes, is comparable to the distinction between rhetorical, dialectical, and demonstrative arguments found in Averroes’s writings and addressed to three types of readers. If there are different ways to understand Strauss, this may very well be due to the fact that Strauss himself directed different arguments to different audiences.

No, no, no. This is all wrong. It is Verskin who is being esoteric. Read my introductory essay, "How to Begin to Study How to Begin to Study The Guide of the Perplexed". Strauss doesn't address three audiences at once; he addresses one audience at three separate times . If you think about this, you will realize an important truth. There are no ways to understand Strauss, as Strauss never existed , but was only a fictitious descendant of a family of Viennese composers. As for Verskin, he has descended into an opium-fueled madness, and as of this typing, is lying face-down in an alley in Natrona Heights, Penna. In his delirium a few coins had fallen from Verskin's belt, along with a cone of bright metal, the size of a die. In vain a boy tried to pick up this cone. A man was scarcely able to raise it from the ground. It held in my hand for a few minutes; I remember that its weight was intolerable and that after it was removed, the feeling of oppressiveness remained. I also remember the exact circle it pressed into my palm. The sensation of a very small and at the same time extremely heavy object produced a disagreeable impression of repugnance and fear. One of the local men suggested we throw it into the swollen river; I acquired it for a few zogbucks. No one knew anything about Verskin, except that "he came from the border." These small, very heavy cones (made from a metal which is not of this world) are images of the divinity in certain regions of Salotrea.

How many languages do you speak, Thomas? Also, have you ever hosted a radio show on one of those foreign languages you speak? I fucking win again.

America is territorially huge w/a strongly dominant English language. So its not imperative to learn foreign languages here. I took Latin in college b/c I wanted a foundation in it to study the law.

There are lots of special Shia episodes of TV shows. My favourite is the one in which Cagney & Lacey are stoned to death.

  1. 26 minutes ago - [IMG] Thomas777 : Chad wrote an essay about how Meet the Fockers is a radical critique of misandry in our anti-male culture, but I think Mac and Me is far superior. Mac and Me is about how a young boy can liberate himself from the oppressive constraints of familial expectations by expressing himself through consumer choices and love of hamburgers and space aliens
